Comets

Several unknowns remain about the formation of our solar system and in particular about the origin of the ocean and of the terrestrial atmosphere, both essential to current life. The study of the small bodies of the solar system and more particularly of comets is interesting from this point of view. Indeed, comets, balls of ice and dust formed at the border of the solar system, have preserved primitive matter in their core. Using the high-resolution spectrometers attached to the largest telescopes (VLT, Keck), researchers of the GAPHE and OrCA groups study these fossil bodies to provide clues on the physical and chemical conditions prevailing at the beginning of the solar system.
