Master in Space Sciences

Master thesis

During the second year of the Master in Space Sciences, students must prepare a thesis worth 27 credits (among the 120 credits of the complete Master). It constitutes the very first opportunity for students to produce a genuine research-oriented work. The thesis is supervised by an experienced researcher, and the student is immersed in the environment of a research team for the duration of her/his thesis work.

By the end of their work, students have to write a dissertation emphasizing their personal contributions, and the final test consists of a public presentation followed by a defense in the presence of examiners.

For the Research focus, the topics may be selected from the list of proposals made available on this web page every year in May, or can result from specific arrangements between students and researchers of the Department of Astrophysics, Geophysics and Oceanography. For the Professional focus, the master thesis will consist of an internship and students have to achieve an agreement with an external institution.

Students who selected the Research focus have to communicate their choice to the coordinator of the Master (mss.ago@uliege.be) at the very start of the second year of the Master. Students who selected the Professional focus may communicate their thesis topic a little bit later, but the sooner the better. Students are encouraged to discuss with their candidate supervisor about recommended courses that should be selected for their second year in support of their thesis work.
